World Mental Health Day Blog: Why we have to keep in check our mental well-being?

Health according to WHO is defined as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Mental health can be explained as our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It emphasizes how we identify our own abilities and how effectively we can cope with day to day life stressors. Thus, we can be productive and make a good contribution to the community. So mental health is a pivotal factor for not only to the individual but for the healthy functioning of the entire community. As Sri Lankans, we always consider about how well we grow as individuals as well as a group. We have strong roots from Buddhism as well as from our collectivistic culture. We are a nation with a pleasant smile, supportive nature and most importantly focusing on solutions in every challenge. We perform well in every country due to these qualities and the creativity we possess. Along with the changes in our life styles, it is hard for us to use the same coping skills but surely, we can continue our qualities and pass it over to the next generation. For that we have to be aware of how the style of our issues has changed and what are the new ways to handle these challenges effectively. Being aware about the mental health issues and be brave to seek help are pivotal factors to achieve these goals. Counselling and psychotherapy for normal people. We need to change the idea that people who seek therapy for psychological or emotional issues are weak. Seeking help shows that they are strong and they refuse to accept the defeat. That is a mark of a true warrior. If you go through a break up or lost a loved one, it is okay for you to seek help because obviously you’re emotionally affected. If you find difficult to manage work, financial stressors and family matters it is okay for you to seek help. If you feel sad, worried and anxious for no apparent reason, it’s okay for you to seek help. Let’s make seeking help for emotional and mental health issues an essential part of life.
